The Student Chapter of AIME is still a viable force on the Mines Campus

This year we have gone into areas never before entered, at least not in recorded history. Since AIME is nationally made up of miners, geologists, petroleum men and metallurgists, we decided that in order to strengthen the organization we would try to recruit members from the other options.

AIME student members work on Mineral City headframe. Our first attempt was not overly successful, though we were able to get S. Arthur Stewart from Petroleum, who has become our Chapter photographer.

The other new area we entered was that of sponsoring activities with Blue Key. Dirk Benham is both president of Blue Key and on the Executive Board of AIME.

In September, between registration and the actual start of classes, we combined the two organizations to get support for a climb up Mines peak to kick off Centennial year’s activities. The event was dramatized well by Dan Galbraith in the October issue of the MINES Magazine. The event was such a success that we plan to get together more often to plan activities.

This year has been an interesting one concerning personnel changes in AIME and the Mining Department. George Bator was officially appointed Head of the Department; he is also our faculty counselor. During the Homecoming weekend, sounds of the Blue Grass music were heard from within the hoist house as AIMEers like Tom Bibb and Paul Danio entertained everyone well into the morning hours.

Engineers’ Day is April 5 and 6 this year. Jim Nunn is organizing our exhibit, but since the theme is the Beginning of the New Era," he is having a difficult time getting futuristic models. So Tom Bibb and Bob Byrd are helping him. Bob Handford, only a sophomore, is setting up the Mining contests this year, with help from Senior Rich Bate. It should prove to be a rousing success for AIME this year, as it was last year.

The AIME Convention was in Dallas this year, and representing the students were Art Stewart, Bill Warfield, Wrex Harnish, Jim Hanley, Bob Byrd, Bob Handford, Jonathan Lang, John Marek, and George Matthews. To finance the trip this year, besides company donations, we sold our vinyl bumper sticker.

The only thing on our calendar after E-Day is the Computer Symposium where we will provide manpower. After that is election of next year’s officers and graduation for some; for the rest of us, yet another year to come.
